What is BitTorrent?

BitTorrent

is a peer-to-peer file sharing (P2P) communications protocol. BitTorrent is a method of distributing large amounts of data widely without the original distributor incurring the entire costs of hardware, hosting and bandwidth resources. Instead, when data is distributed using the BitTorrent protocol, each recipient supplies pieces of the data to newer recipients, reducing the cost and burden on any given individual source, providing redundancy against system problems, and reducing dependence on the original distributor.

The protocol is the brainchild of programmer Bram Cohen, who designed it in April 2001 and released a first implementation on 2 July 2001. It is now maintained by Cohen's company BitTorrent, Inc. BC Usage of the protocol accounts for significant traffic on the Internet, but the precise amount has proven difficult to measure. There are numerous compatible BitTorrent clients, written in a variety of programming languages, and running on a variety of computing platforms.

How Do I Make A Torrent?

Azureus
Download Azureus

Step 1. File - New Torrent (or CTRL + N)
Step 2. Select 'Use an external Tracker'

Now just put one or a few of the popular public trackers in the space beside 'Announce URL:' Here are some examples of the most popular public trackers right now:

http://tracker.bt-chat.com/announce
http://inferno.demonoid.com:3389/announce
http://tracker.prq.to/announce
http://tracker.zerotracker.com:2710/announce
http://open.tracker.thepiratebay.org/announce
http://www.torrent-downloads.to:2710/announce

http://64.62.145.163:6969/announce
http://secret-cinema.com:6969/announce
http://tracker.boxtorrents.com:2710/announce.php

Step 3. Select 'Single file' or 'Directory', (clicking on single file will allow you to make a torrent for one file, selecting directory will allow you to make all files in that directory into a torrent.) After you choose which option you want click Next.
Step 4. Now if you have your single file or directory selected you can click 'Next'.
Step 5. Leave 'Piece Size' on 'Auto'
Step 6. Do NOT select 'private torrent'
Step 7. Do select 'Allow decentralized tracking when tracker is unavailable'
Step 8. Select 'Finish' go to the directory where Azureus is installed, go to torrents folder, find your torrent and send the torrentyoujustmade.torrent file to your friends.
Note: You do not need to upload the torrent file to a website or a tracker. This means you and your friends are the only ones who can download the file.

How do I open r00, r01, r02, r03, r04 files?

These are files that have been split in to multiple parts by Winrar. Just find the '.rar' or '.r00' file and extract it using Winrar. Once installed just 'right click' on the file and you should have the option to exract here. Or just open Winrar, open the file, click extract. You can get Winrar here: Winrar or Winzip.

If you are using a form of Linux or OS X you can use unRAR.

What do all these words mean?

I will just give a brief summary of the BitTorrent Terminology/Jargon. If you are looking for more technical information or are looking for terms not listed here you can go to Wikipedia.

torrent

A Torrent is a small file that contains information about the file you want to download, such as the size, filename and a hash which is a digital signature of sorts. (A security feature to make sure your not getting junk or even worse a virus.) It stores connection information so it can connect to other people that have the same file (known as the Tracker). But the file itself is stored in parts or in whole on other peoples computers.

seed or seeder

Is someone who has a complete copy of a torrent. Once your BitTorrent client finishes the download, it will move into the upload section which means you are now uploading it to other people. So you should try and leave it uploading for as long a you can so other people can get a faster download.

leecher

Leecher refers to someone who is uploading and downloading a torrent file at the same time. So if the file you are trying to download is not complete, you are a leecher.

tracker

Is like a go between. An internet server that helps you connect to other users and collects data from you and them. Your BitTorrent program will periodically check with the server to see if there is anymore users to connect to.

scrape

Scraping means your BitTorrent client is requesting information from the tracker server to see if there is anyone else you can download from or if someone you were downloading from is gone. Some BitTorrent programs allow you to manually scrape, like Azureus for example.

Previous
super seed

Some BitTorrent client have a feature called "super seed". Which means your client would be looking for unique parts of files to send to people who are uploading from you. Then those people can swap those pieces of the file to people they are connected to who are trying to download the same file.

swarm
a group of seeds and peers sharing the same torrent.
block
A block is a piece of a file. When a file is distributed via BitTorrent, it is broken into smaller pieces, or blocks. Typically the block is 250kb in size, but it can vary with the size of the file being distributed. Breaking the file into pieces allows it to be distributed as efficiently as possible. Users get their files faster using less bandwidth.
choked
Means the user is uploading to four (default) other users and cannot upload to any others.
peer
Peer is just another term for a leecher.
indexer
An indexer refers to websites that store (index) the torrents.
ie: Mininova.org Piratebay.org Torrentspy.com.

Download stuck at 99.9%

I've seen this happen several times, different torrents/clients/trackers. I've had luck with walking away from the torrent for a day or so, then try again and/or deleting the file and starting over. Simply waiting does not seem to work, I have a torrent right now that I started at 99% a day ago, and it's already downloaded THREE TIMES the total torrent size, and it thinks all the chunks have been bad. This usually results from buggy NAT routers that are replacing legitimate data in your packets. When the packet fails the hash check, because the router scrambled it, BitTorrent rejects it, and asks for the data again. And be glad BitTorrent has noticed that your router was corrupting packets none of your other software figured it out!

Routers known to have problems with BitTorrent clients

The following is a list of routers that have problems with BitTorrent (and many other P2P applications). If you have one of those... either try the solution specified with it (if there is any), update the firmware or get a new one. If your router or modem freezes/reboots, you should turn off IP resolving, DHT, and/or reduce the number of connections to try to remedy the problem, even if it's not on this list.

Apple Airport Extreme - 802.11g wireless with 128-bit WEP
(Due to too many connections.)

SpeedStream 5660 in Router/NAPT configuration.
(There is no firmware newer than 2.(3).7. Switch to bridged mode and firewall your network to fix it.
Otherwise, when it dies just power-cycle the router and continue on.)

arrow_up.jpg Top

The following modems/routers have known problems with too many global connections, limiting them to 200 or less should fix the problems:

- D-Link 302G
- D-Link DI-624
- D-Link DSL-G664T
- Linksys BEFSR41V4/BESR41
- Linksys Wireless-B
- Netgear DG632
- Netgear DG834G
- Netgear MR814
- Netgear WGT524
- Netgear Rangemax 802.11n WPN824
- W-Linx MB401-S (and SMC Barricade 7004 BR, which is identical in construction)
- Westell 6100 - (Due to UPnP)

arrow_up.jpg Top

- Most D-Link 5xx and 6xx (can also be caused by too many connections)
- D-Link DI-604
- Dynalink RTA1025W
- TP-LINK TL-R410
- ZyXEL Prestige 660H(W) (Firmware versions PE8+ will fix this)
- Some SpeedStreams - (Due to Port Forwarding)
- D-Link DI-514 (not port forwarding UDP protocol consistently)

Common fixes for routers/modems freezing/crashing/etc
- Updating the router firmware.
- Turning off the UPnP (in the client and in the router) and doing manual port forwarding.
- Restricting the number of global connections to 200 or less (may need to go below 100, depending on the router).
- Turning off DHT.
- Lowering net.max_halfopen and bt.connect_speed.
- Putting the modem/router into bridge or gateway mode (doesn't apply to modems that aren't routers).
- Getting a new router/modem.
